A balanced first day

This plan is built for a first visit. It does not try to tick the whole city in a day; it combines a morning in the medina, a midday break and a late afternoon turned toward the sea. The goal is to leave with a clear reading of Tangier rather than an exhausting list of half-seen places.

Preparing the day

Have a solid breakfast, wear comfortable shoes and keep some small change on you. Distances are reasonable but they add up, especially in the midday sun. We deliberately don't give exact travel times: traffic, waiting for a taxi or a longer wander can easily shift the whole plan by an hour.

Essential and optional

Treat the medina, the kasbah and an evening by the sea as the essential core: if time runs short, don't cut here. Café Hafa, Cap Spartel or the Caves of Hercules are optional extensions and can be swapped for a simple return to the Corniche or the Marina. Better fewer things done well than everything rushed.

The route step by step

  1. Morning: Grand Socco and medina

Start at the Grand Socco to orient yourself, then head down to the Petit Socco and the market lanes. Give it at least two hours — that's short.

  2. Late morning: Kasbah

Climb to the kasbah, visit the museum if you like history, and take time on the terrace over the strait.

  3. Lunch break

Head down to the Marina or the Corniche for a longer break. It is also the right moment to cut the day short if heat or tiredness demand it.

  4. Afternoon: Café Hafa (optional)

By short taxi ride, head up to Café Hafa for tea over the strait. Optional, but very characteristic of Tangier.

  5. End of day on the Corniche

Return to the Corniche or the Marina for sunset, a quiet walk and dinner by the sea.
