Downtown and Pasteur: shopping streets, cafés, restaurants and easy taxis — a balanced compromise. Marina and Corniche: modern seafront hotels, flat promenade, perfect for families and comfort. Malabata: quieter east coast, beaches, but far from the historic centre. Marshan: quiet residential area above the Kasbah, great views, near Café Hafa. Around Tanger Ville: handy for the fast ferry to Tarifa or arriving by train.
Luggage, hills, noise and late arrivals
Medina lanes are beautiful but narrow, often cobbled and sometimes steep: travelling with a 30 kg hard-shell suitcase is very uncomfortable there. If you arrive late, prefer a hotel downtown, on the Corniche or at the Marina — easier to find by taxi at night. Always check the exact address before booking: 'Tangier' covers a very wide bay, and the same price can mean a hotel 5 minutes from the port or 30 minutes by road.
