Afternoon

A day's end facing the Atlantic

This route strings together the best Tangier spots to watch the sea shift colour in the late afternoon. The idea is simple: start on the bay side while the light is still warm, then move west to catch sunset over the ocean. You walk little, take a taxi for the longer stretches, and keep time to sit. It's a plan for travellers who prefer one shared, beautiful scene over rushing through several sites.

Light, wind and safety

The exact sunset time shifts a lot between winter and summer: check it in the morning and be in place at least thirty minutes before. The west wind can be sharp at Cap Spartel, especially in spring and autumn — bring a light windproof layer. On the rocks at Cap Spartel and Achakkar beach, keep back from surging waves and don't go down when the sea is rough. After sunset the light drops quickly: plan your return.

Plan B if the sky is overcast

A grey sky doesn't ruin the outing. Switch to a more urban pair: the Corniche for a seafront walk, then Café Hafa to watch the strait from the stepped terraces with tea in hand. The soft light there is especially beautiful and the wind less biting than on the open Atlantic coast. You can also stay at the Marina and eat facing the boats.

The route step by step

  1. Start on the Corniche

Start on the bay side in the late afternoon. The low light is already beautiful and sets the calm pace for the outing.

  2. Pause at Café Hafa

Have a mint tea on the stepped terraces and let the strait open below you before moving west.

  3. Taxi to Cap Spartel

Take a petit taxi or a shared grand taxi depending on availability. Agree the price before getting in.

  4. Sunset at the lighthouse

Settle near Cap Spartel lighthouse, back to the wind, to watch the Atlantic catch fire. Stay on the designated platforms.

  5. Back to town

Night falls fast. Head back while a few taxis are still parked near the lighthouse, or combine with dinner at the Marina.
