A short loop to understand the medina

This walk is for travellers discovering Tangier for the first time who want to cross the medina without getting lost, in two to three hours. It threads the landmarks that always come up in local conversation — Grand Socco, Petit Socco, market lanes, kasbah, viewpoint — so the city takes shape before you wander more freely later.

Before you set off

The medina is walked on uneven cobbles with several gentle climbs between the Grand Socco and the kasbah. Wear closed shoes, carry water and a little cash in dirhams for tea, juice or a small purchase. Mobile coverage works but is patchy in the lanes: download the offline map and spot your main exit gates in advance — Bab el Fahs near the Grand Socco and Bab Kasbah at the top.

During the walk

Walk slowly, let handcarts pass, and remember the medina slopes down to the sea and up to the kasbah — that simple logic is enough to reorient. Bargain calmly if you buy, greet with 'salam' and thank with 'choukran', and never step into a home or workshop without being invited. Photos are fine in public space, but always ask before photographing a face or a shop interior.

Step by step

  1. Start at the Grand Socco

Meet on the round square in front of Cinéma Rif. It is the easiest landmark and the natural entrance to the medina through Bab el Fahs.

  2. Down to the Petit Socco

Follow rue Es Siaghine, the old jewellers' street, down to the small square of historic cafés. Sit for a few minutes — it is the best spot to watch the medina live.

  3. Through the market lanes

From the Petit Socco, let the lanes carry you north: spices, fabrics, leather, slippers. Don't hunt for a set path — just keep the kasbah as your high point.

  4. Up to the kasbah

The last lanes climb up to Bab Kasbah. The slope is moderate but steady — take your time and pause halfway if needed.

  5. Kasbah square and museum

Cross the Kasbah square and step into the museum housed in the old palace. The collection is compact and gives a useful key to reading the region's ancient sites.

  6. Viewpoint and exit

Finish on the terrace that overlooks the port and the strait. To go back down without retracing the same lanes, exit through Bab Kasbah and reach the Corniche via the wider outer streets.
