Cap Spartel — where Atlantic meets Mediterranean
The northwesternmost point of the African continent, marked by a white lighthouse.
Cap Spartel
At the north-western tip of Africa, Cap Spartel overlooks the point where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean. About 15 km west of Tangier, the 1864 lighthouse marks a wide view over the strait, the cliffs and the long Achakkar beach below.
Why visit
- Unique panorama where two seas meet, with Spain visible on clear days.
- The historic 1864 lighthouse, a symbol of the Tangier coast.
- Ideal starting point for Achakkar, the Hercules Caves and Rmilat.
Best time to go
- Late afternoon for the Atlantic sunset.
- Morning to avoid wind and crowds.
- Spring and autumn: soft light, fewer people.
How long to spend
- Allow 45 min to 1 h on site for the view and the lighthouse.
- 2–3 h if you add Achakkar and the Hercules Caves.
Good for
- Families and kids for a half-day in nature.
- Photographers after a memorable sunset.
- Short stays looking for an easy "out-of-Tangier" trip.
Practical tips
- Take a grand or petit taxi with an agreed round-trip price.
- Bring a light windbreaker — the coast is very exposed, even in summer.
- Bring water and dirham cash for snacks and parking.
What to avoid
- Staying past sunset without a return plan — taxis are scarce in the evening.
- Getting too close to the cliff edge with children.
- Going at midday in summer without a hat and water.
Nearby places
- Hercules Caves, a few minutes away.
- Achakkar beach right below.
- Perdicaris Park (Rmilat) on the way back.
Local-style advice
Many Tangier locals come up to Cap Spartel on a Friday afternoon for the view and a tea in the wind. Do the same: don't rush, walk slowly along the cliff, then head down to Achakkar to end the day with your feet in the sand.
