Marshan district

Marshan is the plateau that extends the Kasbah westwards above the strait. Historically, wealthy Tangier families, consulates and diplomats settled here in the early 20th century: set-back villas, quiet lanes, schools and private gardens. To this day the district keeps a slow rhythm, a distinctive late-afternoon light and a strong feeling of local life, far from the medina's tourist bustle.

At the district's northern tip, a rocky headland holds a Phoenician necropolis: several tombs carved into the rock, open to the sea. It is one of the most moving spots in Tangier — a plain public space, no museum, no ticket, where you literally feel the city has watched the strait for over two thousand years. The wind is strong, the view vast, and on clear days you can make out the Spanish coast.

The best way to grasp Marshan is to link it to its neighbours. From the Kasbah, exit through the western gate and follow the ridge: you reach Marshan in 10–15 minutes on foot, almost flat. Dropping down towards the cliff you arrive at Café Hafa, whose terraced levels facing the strait are the perfect end-of-afternoon conclusion. This short loop avoids the busiest tourist zones and delivers heritage, panoramas and a tea break in one walk.

Marshan is a lived-in district: keep a discreet tone on residential streets and never photograph the inside of homes or children without consent. Wear comfortable shoes — the slopes down to Café Hafa can be slippery after rain. In summer, favour late afternoon: the wind eases the heat and the light is superb. Taxis are easy to find near the main square; back down to the medina takes 5–10 minutes by petit taxi. Classic mistake: coming in full midday heat without water or trying to rush everything.
