The medina shops of Tangier aren't grand monumental souks — they are dozens of small businesses scattered through lanes between Petit Socco, Grand Socco and rue Es-Siaghine. You wander to discover, compare, chat and leave with pieces you wouldn't find in a gallery.

Where to look in the medina

Rue Es-Siaghine: the former jewellers' street, now a mix of crafts, leather, souvenirs and cafés.
Petit Socco: several shops and historic cafés — a good starting point.
Lanes around the Kasbah: quieter workshops, carpets, jewellery, antiques.
Grand Socco: the gateway from the new city, with both modern and traditional shops.

Bargaining with respect

Do a first loop without buying — get your bearings and compare prices.
Discreetly note or photograph the shopfronts you like.
Give it time: the medina is best explored slowly — two or three hours minimum.
