Overview
Djellabas, caftans, gandoras and scarves are part of everyday Moroccan life and also beautiful souvenirs to wear. There are simple everyday pieces and hand-embroidered ceremony outfits, with very different prices. In Tangier you find both, in the medina and around the Grand Socco.
Types and styles to know
- Djellaba: long hooded robe, cotton or wool, unisex. Everyday Moroccan garment.
- Caftan: women's robe without hood, often embroidered, worn at weddings and celebrations.
- Takchita: two-layer women's outfit, very ceremonial, with a belt (mdamma).
- Gandora: short tunic without long sleeves, lighter than a djellaba.
- Shawls and scarves: silk, embroidered cotton or Rif fabric. An easy, light, versatile gift.
How to recognise quality
- Embroidery: on a hand-made piece the back is neat but the stitches show; on a machine piece everything is identical and even.
- Fabric: real cotton or wool for winter, satin or silk for caftans. Avoid pure polyester — hot and squeaky.
- Stitching: even, with a proper lining on dressier pieces.
- Always try it on. Moroccan cuts may fit differently than you're used to.
Checklist before you pay
- Check sleeves, buttons (sfifa, aakad) and hem.
- Ask for the fabric label when there is one, or note the composition on the receipt.
- Remember a high-end wedding caftan may need several fittings or an alteration.
Mistakes and red flags
- Buying the displayed size without trying it on.
- Taking a heavily embroidered piece without checking the back.
- Paying couture caftan prices as if it were ready-to-wear — real bespoke caftans are genuinely expensive.
Take home, shipping, customs
- Light pieces: travel fine in cabin luggage.
- Embroidered caftans: ask for a flat garment bag or box; avoid tight folding.
