Tangier + Asilah day

Asilah is a small port town south of Tangier, known for its white ramparts, painted alleys and quiet Atlantic mood. It is probably the most accessible day trip from Tangier: distance is reasonable, the town is walkable and its layout is easy to read. One day is plenty to enjoy the atmosphere without rushing. Asilah's charm lies as much in its whitewashed walls as in the slowness of its pace, very different from Tangier's density.

Two main options: the train from Tanger Ville station, regular and comfortable, and the shared grand taxi from its dedicated stand. Journey times and schedules can shift: check on the same day via the official ONCF website or at the station, rather than relying on an advertised duration. Plan the return before nightfall if you have not booked a room in Asilah, especially off season when frequency drops.

Each summer Asilah hosts a cultural festival that repaints the walls and turns the town into an open-air gallery: a beautiful but also busiest moment. The rest of the year the town is quiet, sometimes almost sleepy. Two common mistakes: leaving Tangier too late in the morning, and trying to combine Asilah with another destination the same day. If time is tight, stay with the ramparts, the painted medina and a meal facing the ocean.

Asilah is a light-packing trip, but a few essentials make the day easier. Real closed shoes are enough: the lanes are clean but cobbled. Carry water, a hat and sunscreen, since the ramparts and seafront give little shade. Some cash in dirhams helps for small artisan buys and cafés, not all of which take cards. Keep some ID on you: it can be asked for on the train or at a road check.

Asilah lives at a different pace depending on the season: very quiet outside summer, livelier during the cultural festival. Many shops close early in low season, so plan meals without rushing. Bring water, sun protection and comfortable shoes for walking along the ramparts, where shade is scarce in the middle of the day.
