Tangier + Tetouan day

Tetouan is very different from Tangier: smaller, more intimate, with a deep Andalusian identity. Its medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site and reads like an architecture book, with houses handed down from families expelled from Al-Andalus. The city splits into two complementary halves: the compact old medina, and the modern Ensanche built under the Spanish protectorate, with wide avenues and pastel façades. Both can be walked in a day.

The shared grand taxi is the most used way to reach Tetouan from Tangier, from a dedicated stand. Coaches also run. Leave a margin: the road can flow or drag depending on the time and season. Count at least half a day in the medina, and add time for the Ensanche and a museum. Do not plan Tetouan on a tight rhythm; prepare the return before dark, especially off season when grand taxi frequency drops.

Tetouan's medina is more turned inward than Tangier's and lives largely to the rhythm of its residents. Dress simply, cover shoulders and knees, and avoid photographing people without asking. The lanes are narrow: walk slowly, let deliveries pass, and if you get lost, head back toward Bab er-Rouah or Bab el-Okla, easily identified gates. When in doubt, ask a shopkeeper rather than someone who spontaneously offers paid guidance.

A Tetouan visit hinges a lot on when you place lunch. Eating early, around 12:30, avoids peak rush at some local spots and keeps energy for the afternoon. Pick a simple medina restaurant rather than wandering too long: hunger arrives fast with walking. Afterwards, a tea in an Ensanche café bridges the old and modern halves of the city and gently sets up the end of the day before the return.

Tetouan's medina feels more intimate than Tangier's, but the lanes quickly look alike and it is easy to get turned around: a local guide, even for just an hour, makes the visit much richer. Some museum and Foundation hours can shift, so ask on arrival rather than trusting old information. Allow enough time for the return trip, especially in the late afternoon.
