Modern Tangier

Opened in 2007 and heavily expanded since, Tanger Med has become one of the Mediterranean's biggest container ports. Located about forty kilometres east of the city, it has reshaped the economic balance of northern Morocco: industrial zones, logistics, automotive suppliers, ferry links to Spain, Italy and France. The historic downtown port has been converted into the Marina, cruise terminal and a pedestrian promenade that gave the sea back to Tangier residents.

Since 2018, Al Boraq links Tangier to Casablanca via Rabat in just over two hours: it is the first high-speed line in Africa. It has brought Tangier closer to the rest of the kingdom, boosted business tourism and given Tanger Ville station a central role again. Ibn Battouta airport has been expanded and the motorway to Tétouan and Ceuta modernised, making the city better connected than ever.

The city now welcomes Moroccan, European and cruise visitors, and more and more weekenders. The Corniche, the Marina, the new waterfront, the restored medina, the music and film festivals coexist with the historic cafés and the views from Café Hafa. The current challenge is to host without losing itself: preserving the medina, the Andalusi-Moroccan culture, the cosmopolitan memory and the popular identity that make Tangier unique.
