Tangier Med port
Tangier Med is a large port located about 45 km east of Tangier city. It is not in the centre — do not confuse it with the Tangier City port. • Mostly used for major ferry routes (especially from Algeciras) and for vehicles. • On arrival, you'll need extra transport (taxi, shuttle, coach) to reach Tangier city. Allow 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on traffic. • Always check which port is listed on your ticket, and plan extra time and budget for transport. Quick answer
Tanger Med is the big freight and ferry port, about 45 km east of central Tangier. Allow 45–60 min by road depending on traffic. Leave plenty of buffer before a ferry.
- Access: grand taxi, shuttle or private car from central Tangier / airport.
- Passport, ticket and customs: arrive at least 2 h before ferry departure.
- Don't mix up Tanger Med (45 km) with Tanger Ville, the city-centre port.

What to expect
- Mediterranean mega-port 45 km east of Tangier. Vast and well-organised, but not at all in town.
- Main entry point for ferries from Algeciras and most international car or truck routes.
- ATMs, exchange, cafés and shops in the passenger area. No train station connected to the city.
Getting to the centre
- Shared grand taxi: most common option. Price per seat, or pay for all seats to leave at once.
- Official shuttle bus to Tangier: moderate fare, timed with the main ferries.
- Own or rental car: A4 motorway to Tangier (~45 min) or direct to Tetouan / Chefchaouen.
- No walking: there's no pedestrian access to the city. Always plan transport.
Practical tips
- Allow 1 to 1.5 h between leaving the ferry and reaching the city (customs + transfer).
- Withdraw a few dirhams at the port before leaving the passenger area.
- Worth combining with Tetouan, Chefchaouen or Asilah — Tanger Med is a good base for the north.
Ideal for
- Travellers driving from Europe by car, motorbike or campervan.
- Truckers and freight on the Algeciras–Morocco line.
- Travellers planning a northern road trip (Tetouan, Chefchaouen, Mediterranean coast).
Avoid this
- Mixing up Tanger Med with the central port — it's 45 km and another transport leg.
- Relying on a random taxi at night — prefer the shuttle or a pre-booking.
